Extend an image beyond its original frame

Thague's Expand tool changes an image's canvas to a new ratio and fills the added space. Unlike a crop, expansion creates new surrounding content. It can help adapt an existing composition for a wider banner or a different layout without simply cutting away the original scene.

Choose the ratio for the destination

Before expanding, decide where the image will be used. A wide header, square card and vertical layout each need different space. Think about where the subject should sit and whether you need a quieter area for text. Expanding the scene does not guarantee that every subject will remain perfectly unchanged.

Describe continuity, not a second scene

The optional instruction can describe what belongs in the new area: more of the existing wall, floor, sky or landscape. Match the original style, perspective and lighting. Asking for unrelated objects or a second location can make the transition between old and new areas more difficult to judge.

Inspect the join

Look for bent lines, repeated objects and changes in texture where the original meets the generated area. Architecture, horizons and patterned backgrounds are useful places to spot discontinuities. If your layout uses text over the image, add the final typography separately so you can control spacing and legibility.

How to use it in Thague

  1. Open Studio → Edit and add an image.
  2. Select Expand and choose the new aspect ratio.
  3. Optionally describe the content to paint into the added space.
  4. Review the estimate, run the tool and check the boundary areas.

Example expansion instruction

Continue the pale studio wall and stone floor into the new space. Keep the same soft side lighting, straight perspective and uncluttered background.

What to check before sharing

The new areas are generated, not recovered from outside the photograph. Expansion may introduce objects or distort perspective. Do not describe the expanded result as a faithful record of an original scene.

Questions

Is image expansion the same as resizing?

No. Resizing changes the dimensions of existing content. Expand adds canvas space and generates content to fill it, while Upscale increases resolution.

Is a prompt required for Expand?

The Expand tool accepts an optional instruction. You choose the new ratio and can describe what to create in the added area.
